What Determines Borehole Cost in Nigeria?
1. Target Depth
This is the single largest variable in borehole pricing. Borehole depth varies by geological formation and location:
- Lagos coastal plain: 30m to 80m to reach a productive aquifer in most areas. Some locations in Lekki and Ikoyi require 100m+ for good quality water.
- Abuja / FCT: Basement rock geology means water is found in fractured rock at depths of 40m to 120m. Some sites in Abuja require 150m+ drilling.
- Port Harcourt / Rivers State: Shallow aquifers often at 20m to 50m due to the river delta geology, but water quality can be problematic (iron-rich or brackish at shallow depths).

2. Borehole Diameter
Standard residential boreholes in Nigeria are typically drilled at 6 inches (150mm) diameter, providing enough space for a 4-inch submersible pump. 3. Casing Type and Length
The borehole must be lined (cased) from the surface down to the aquifer entry point to prevent collapse and surface water contamination. Two main casing types:
