The Three Main Fence Types in Nigeria

1. Sandcrete Block Fence

By far the most common perimeter fence type in Nigerian residential and commercial developments. A block fence consists of reinforced concrete strip footings, hollow sandcrete blocks (typically 225mm or 150mm thick), mortar joints, and external rendering or plastering on one or both faces. Standard heights range from 1.8m to 3m above ground level. Block fences are durable, provide good privacy and security, and are familiar to every Nigerian bricklayer — making them easy to price and build.

2. BRC Wire Mesh Fence

BRC (Barbed-wire Reinforced Concrete) or galvanised welded wire mesh fences are used where visibility through the perimeter is acceptable or desirable — estate boundaries where the internal landscape is meant to be seen, commercial facilities, industrial compounds, and sports fields. The fence consists of concrete posts at 2.5m to 3m centres, with galvanised wire mesh panels fixed between them. BRC fences are faster to erect, cheaper per metre than block fences, but provide less privacy and lower physical security against determined intruders.

3. Concrete Post and Panel Fence

A precast concrete fence system using factory-cast concrete posts and flat or decorative concrete panels slotted between them. Precast concrete fences are faster to erect on site than block fences (no curing time for mortar), but require access for the delivery vehicle and crane or A-frame for panel installation. Quality varies significantly by precast manufacturer.

What Drives Fence Costs in Nigeria?

Fence Height

Height is the biggest single variable for block fences. Adding 300mm of height to a block fence (roughly one additional course of blocks) increases material cost by about 12% to 15% and has a proportional effect on labour. Security heights of 2.5m to 3m with anti-climb spikes or barbed-wire toppings are significantly more expensive than standard 1.8m domestic fences.

Foundation Conditions

On soft or waterlogged ground (common in Lagos Island, Lekki, parts of the mainland), standard strip footings may need to be deeper or wider, or even redesigned as pad footings with connecting ground beams. Topography

Plastering and Finishing

Is a BRC fence cheaper to maintain than a block fence?

In the long run, no.
