A retaining wall must resist the lateral pressure of the earth behind it, drainage forces, surcharge loads from vehicles or buildings above the retained earth, and in some cases seismic or flood loads. Types of Retaining Walls Used in Nigeria
1. Mass Concrete Gravity Wall
A solid concrete wall that relies on its own weight to resist lateral earth pressure. No reinforcement required (or minimal). Cost-effective for walls up to about 1.5m retained height. Simple to construct but uses a large volume of concrete. Common in rural and peri-urban Nigerian projects where simplicity of construction is valued over material efficiency.
2. Reinforced Concrete Cantilever Wall
The standard retaining wall for heights above 1.5m to 2m. An L-shaped or T-shaped reinforced concrete structure where a relatively thin vertical stem connects to a wide base slab that provides stability through the weight of soil placed on the toe of the footing. More material-efficient than mass concrete walls but requires structural design and skilled formwork. Used extensively on commercial and estate development sites in Nigeria.
3. Block Masonry Retaining Wall
A retaining wall built from sandcrete hollow blocks with concrete-filled cores and vertical reinforcement bars. More common in residential Nigerian construction where the contractor is more familiar with blockwork than concrete formwork. Cost-effective for walls up to about 1.2m retained height with appropriate reinforcement. Not suitable for higher retained heights without professional structural design.
4. Gabion Wall
A retaining structure made from wire mesh baskets filled with stone or rubble. Flexible, permeable (good drainage), and particularly suitable for riverbank protection, highway embankments, and rural infrastructure projects. The wire baskets are filled on site with local stone, making them cost-effective where stone is readily available. Increasingly used in Nigerian infrastructure and estate development. Appearance is industrial but can be softened with facing stone selection.
What Drives Retaining Wall Costs in Nigeria?
Retained Height
This is the dominant cost driver. Retaining wall costs increase non-linearly with height because:
- The required wall thickness (and therefore concrete volume) increases with height squared
- Reinforcement content increases significantly at higher retained heights
- Formwork costs increase with height due to more panels, bracing, and pouring lifts
- Foundation depth and base slab size increase with retained height
A 2m-high reinforced concrete cantilever wall costs approximately 2.5 to 3 times the per-linear-metre rate of a 1m wall, not simply double.
Drainage
All retaining walls in Nigeria must include drainage provision to prevent hydrostatic pressure build-up behind the wall (a leading cause of retaining wall failure). This typically means:
- Weep holes through the wall face at regular intervals
- Granular backfill (pea gravel or crushed granite) immediately behind the wall
- A perforated drainage pipe at the base of the wall running to a collection point

Surcharge Loading
If there is a building, driveway, or parking area within about 2× the retained height of the top of the wall, the surcharge load from that structure must be included in the structural design. Higher surcharge = larger wall section = higher cost. Always inform your structural engineer of any planned loading above or adjacent to the retained earth.
Foundation Conditions
The retaining wall footing must be founded on stable bearing ground. On sites with soft soil, fill, or high groundwater, deeper or larger footings may be required. On rock (common in Abuja), the footing may need to be socketed into the rock — which is expensive but provides excellent bearing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do retaining walls in Nigeria need a structural engineer?
Yes, for any wall above 1.2m retained height. Below this, a rule-of-thumb block wall with filled cores and vertical rebar may be acceptable for light domestic use, but any wall that could cause injury or property damage if it fails should be properly engineered. A structural engineering fee is a tiny fraction of the cost of rebuilding a failed wall.
Why do retaining walls fail in Nigeria?
The most common causes: inadequate drainage (hydrostatic pressure in rainy season), insufficient foundation depth (footing in soft fill or topsoil), undersized wall section (particularly DIY block walls), and no surcharge allowance (a car park or building added later above the wall without redesign).
Can I use a block fence as a retaining wall?
This is very common in Nigeria — a standard perimeter block fence is used as a retaining wall on one side of a sloped plot. It is usually inadequate. Standard block fences are not designed for lateral earth pressure and will fail if used to retain more than about 300mm to 500mm of earth without specific structural reinforcement. If your fence must also retain earth, engage a structural engineer to design it.
